Somehow we neglected to point out that Meljoann's album is now available for digital download for €6.00. Get one of the albums of the year on Boy Scout Audio.

'Squick' advances the electronic funk-pop sound introduced in the 'Tour Guide' EP, combining tight vocals and experimental production. Influenced by musics such as 80s and 90s R&B, electro, Detroit techno, Minneapolis funk, electro-acoustic/academic composition, 'IDM', and dance hall.

These nine tracks range from stompers to slow jams, with interludes to aid in your journey.

Composers (in alphabetic order)
Brian Conniffe
Niamh de Barra
Amanda Feery
Laura Hyland
Ian McDonnell
Shane McKenna
Eoin Smith

Instruments
The instruments have been designed to give the composer a wide range of choices to make sound. Strings, air chamber resonators, whistles and percussive objects will make sound acoustically; these will be rigged with pickups for electronic processing and amplification, and computer control via arduino of motors and electromagnets will allow for machine sequencing of physical instruments.

Great line-up for this. A whole heap of more info at kaboogie.net. Should be bangin.
Ilex and Meljoann are the support acts for Irish electronica favourite Hunter-Gatherer at the launch of his Pere Lachaise 7" this Thurs, 7 October.

On the night there'll be giveaways including first-come-first-served USB keys (preloaded with video and mp3), badges and t-shirts. Copies of the 7", among other things, will be onsale at the gig.

Soundcloud Sadness

Saturday, October 02, 2010 2 comments

In case anyone has noticed, many of the Soundcloud files from our sizable back catalogue of mixes and livesets are unavailable. This is because our hosting plan with them has expired and we currently don't have any funds to renew it. For the time being we have a limited selection of recent stuff available on a free account. The Noise and String Series pieces are unaffected by this. We hope to make everything available on a new and improved website before the end of the year. In the meantime, if anyone comes across a particular liveset/DJ set that they want, drop us a mail at hello(at)secondsquaretonone.com and we shall do our best to accommodate you via dropbox or similar.

  NUTE005 - The Last Sound - Fina/Cold/Fire by nuterecords

Featuring remixes from Gland & Conduit and Magnatize, amongst others, this forthcoming EP by the Last Sound on Nute seems an interesting proposition.

October gig postponed

Wednesday, September 08, 2010 0 comments

Looks like our October extravaganza (mentioned last week) will have to be postponed. Venue have jacked up the price and hit us with stipulations (after having already agreed terms sometime ago), which have combined to make the gig untenable at this point. Tis a real shame, we were pretty excited about that one. We shall reschedule soon as possible!

Niamh de Barra 'Cusp' EP by SSTN

Second Square To None is very proud to present the debut EP from Niamh de Barra. A longtime favourite SSTN conspirer, we could think of no better talent to be the inaugural release for our label. After a hugely enjoyable launch gig in the Joinery last week the EP is now currently available as a digital download exclusively on Bandcamp on a pay-what-you-want basis.

Check out a live recording below of Niamh accompanied by an eight-piece choir at her launch gig.

Lying in Bed (choir version) by Niamh de Barra

Niamh de Barra
Niamh (formerly Scurvy Lass) is a classically trained pianist and vocalist from Dublin. Taking up cello in 2003 Niamh played in the improv group John Mary Trilogy for several years before going solo. It was following the dissolution of that band in 2008 that Niamh really came into her own as a songwriter, quickly learning the necessary recording and production techniques to arrive at a distinctive style: a combination of looped vocal lines, effected cello and sharp wit.
